Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a reminder for nurses to prioritize their own health as much as they care for others. As healthcare professionals, it’s easy to focus on patients while overlooking personal wellness. However, regular breast self-exams, clinical screenings, and mammograms are just as important for you. Early detection remains key in the fight against breast cancer, and as a nurse, staying vigilant about your own health can serve as an example for your patients.
Nurses often face high levels of stress and long hours, which can make self-care challenging. Still, it’s essential to stay informed about the latest in breast cancer research and treatment, not only for your patients but also for yourself. Knowing your risks and maintaining routine screenings can make all the difference. Let Breast Cancer Awareness Month be a call to action—not just for your patients, but for your own health and well-being.
We care about you!

Words of Wisdom
by Samantha Bernstein, PhD, RN
I am a Nurse Scientist engaged in patient safety research. Here’s what obstetric nurses need to know about #WorldPatientSafetyDay2024. I am a back-to-basics-b*tch about nursing care of OB patients.
Some rules to live by:
1. Count every patient’s respiratory rate for a full minute. You have time.
2. When your patient says “something feels different,” stop what you are doing. Take a set of vital signs. Listen to their lungs. Ask some questions.
3. When your patient’s family says “Something isn’t right,” take that as seriously as if a physician said it.
4. The very best way I know to keep our patients safe is to pull up a chair by their bedside and ask questions about how they are feeling.
5. Call for help early and often. Ask the midwife or doc for another set of eyes on your patient. “When can I expect you at the bedside?” is a reasonable question.
Nurses are amazing. We can keep our patients safe.
