Fibroid Awareness Month
A globally recognized month is dedicated to raising awareness about uterine fibroids, a condition that affects roughly two-thirds of women. This month-long campaign aims to educate the public, promote early detection, and support those affected by these common uterine growths.
Uterine fibroids are frequent noncancerous growths in the uterus, typically developing during the reproductive years. These fibroids are benign and rarely transform into cancer. Additionally, they are not associated with an increased risk of other uterine cancers. Click here for more information.
July is Cord Blood Awareness Month!
Cord blood, the blood remaining in the umbilical cord and placenta after birth, has many potential benefits:
Stem Cell Transplants: Cord blood is a valuable alternative to bone marrow for transplants as it contains similar blood-forming stem cells that can develop into various cell types. It can treat over 75 diseases, including certain cancers, anemia, leukemia, and Hodgkin’s disease. Cord blood requires less stringent matching between donor and recipient compared to bone marrow and is rarely contaminated with latent viruses.
Public Blood Banks: Mothers can donate their newborn’s cord blood to public banks, which are utilized 30 times more often than private banks due to the widespread prevalence of diseases that cord blood can treat.
Other Potential Uses: Researchers are exploring the use of cord blood to treat conditions like brain injury, autism spectrum disorder, and cerebral palsy.
